Behind the sonic revolution

It all started in a bar.

The Butterfly Bar, to be exact. Co-curators Sarah Njoroge (USA) and Sandy Kamerling (NL) were talking about their next big idea. Having worked together on several academic events, they wanted to focus on a medium they both love: music.

‘Let’s do a vinyl listening bar,’ was the original idea. Then, they became fascinated with the idea of a listening session.

In the wake of political unrest and growing far-right rhetoric in their respective countries, they settled on a vision: a listening session and panel discussion focused on resistance, with the first edition focused on Black resistance bringing together academics from across the Black diaspora.

They called their friends, Martin Blok, a fellow music fiend, and Amina Said, a decorating whiz. Within three weeks, they assembled a team and organized their first event.

resistance RADIO was born.

After their first session, they were hungry for more. Resistance RADIO had a promising format. It found an engaged audience.

But more importantly, it had a message: resistance lights the way towards pathways to combat growing oppressive forces.

Born in 2026, Resistance RADIO is just getting started. Starting with events, we aim to expand the project to new bounds with it’s ethos at its core.
